What we're looking for

We're looking for site-specific, spatial work made for this building and this landscape, not work that already exists and needs a wall to hang on. At least one aspect of the place should be in your concept (this can be abstract, conceptual or relating to our manifesto as well) and let it show in what you propose: it was a power plant, not a gallery.

Any discipline. Past residents have worked in installation, sculpture, sound, and photography. We're not precious about medium as long as the work responds to where it's made.

You don't need to arrive with a finished plan. A lot of the month is about responding to the place once you're actually in it, so you do need to be the kind of person who works that way: comfortable improvising, comfortable being wrong about your first idea. We want the proposal as a way to see if our views align.

We take established and early-career artists alike. What matters more than your CV is whether you'll be a good fit for a small group living and working together for a month; this is a shared residency, not a private studio. We also want to see people who are open to new perspectives and get inspired by that.

Working language is English.

What you get

Housing and food are free for the month. You get your own room, small but yours, plus a shared kitchen, a common room, and the run of the building as workspace, including the machine hall.

There was a materials budget for the group to split, 50 000 NOK in 2026. It was not divided evenly up front, the group worked out together who needed what, based on what people were actually making.

Everything the residency offers comes from funds we apply for each year. In 2026 that paid for housing, food, the materials budget, and a contribution toward some residents' travel.

For 2027 we have applied for considerably more, and paying the artists a fee is part of what we have asked for. We cannot promise a fee before the funding is confirmed, and we would rather say that plainly now than imply something we might not be able to deliver. As soon as we know where we stand, so will you.

Every resident gets a ticket to Festafest, the music festival that takes over the site a week after the residency ends. If fitting your exhibition can stay up through it, so your work meets the festival's audience, not just an opening-night crowd.

If you need a formal invitation or support letter for a visa or a grant application: we'll, of course, write one and help out with the process.

There's no formal technical crew, but the building itself has real infrastructure left over from its working life: a nine-metre machine hall, a movable crane, tall windows, concrete throughout. Bring what your work needs: the space is raw, not a white cube with a workshop behind it.

After the exhibition, the works you have made are yours to keep. Collaborative work is decided on by the participating artists.
